Bereavement Facts & Figures
- Approximately every 30 minutes, a child is bereaved of a parent in the UK¹
- 4% of school aged children (5-16 years) which we estimate to be 7,500 children in Hampshire will have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. This number does not include the death of friends and other close relatives.
- Numbers of children bereaved of other close family members or friends is hard to quantify, however a recent survey suggested that it could be as high as 75% per year¹
- Covering just Hampshire, the Simon Says Helpline receives over 1000 calls per year requesting support and/or information for helping bereaved children
- Nearly 50% of bereaved children supported by Simon Says are due to suddent death eg: heart attack, road traffic accend, suicide or murder
- It costs approximately £79 a year for Simon Says to support a bereaved child
