Coping with serious illness
Death is an inevitable part of life, but if a life is to be shortened by a terminal illness.
You may be unsure about how to talk to your children, who is the best person to talk to them, how much to tell them and when to tell to them – Simon Says can give suggestions and guidance to try and help you through this difficult and overwhelming time.
Parents often worry that they will say or do the wrong thing, but in reality the worst thing has already happened and there will be very little that can make this situation worse. Dealing with the situation together as a family can help to make the situation easier to deal with – now and in the future.
What helps:
- Letting the children know what is happening
- Giving them time to get used to the idea and to say their goodbyes
- Giving them enough support to see the person who is ill
- Involving them when you can, according to their ages and understanding
- Keeping other important adults - including school - informed about what is happening
