Volunteer
I first came across the opportunity to volunteer for Simon Says through my university’s career development website. Upon reading the description it stood out to me as a way to be involved in something bigger than myself that would provide emotional support and comfort to children within my local community who are potentially struggling in silence.
By being involved within the support groups where I help orchestrate the 2 hour sessions that are held each month, I am able to develop some of the professional skills I will need in my own personal future endeavours.
Since being part of this I have witnessed the positive impact these sessions have on these children which is very heart warming and I would definitely encourage anyone who is able to spare two hours each month to consider volunteering as the difference it makes for these children is inexplicable.
Within my role I have discussed the semantics of the emotions they may feel and helped them express their feelings in a creative way which is a positive output for their feelings. It is great fun and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself whilst developing professionally.
I cannot emphasise enough the impact these sessions have on their child. Being a psychology student I understand the cognitive and behavioural implications of their experiences and how it can relate to their mood and attitudes, but I can definitely say that Simon Says does a great job in indirectly addressing their emotions and I have first hand seen the impact it has on them as many of the kids look forward to these groups each month as it is a chance for them to talk and meet other kids who are experiencing a similar ordeal which helps them feel as if they are not alone and provides them with hope.
This charity does wonderful work and I am proud to be part of it
