Sheila Perry

I have been volunteering with Simon Says for 17 years. I joined in response to an advert I saw, looking for people with an interest in arts and crafts, because those are amongst my hobbies. I had no prior experience of either working with children, or bereavement – other than my own personal losses.

After initial training I started at the children’s support group, at that time the only one SS provided. From the first session I was hooked as I saw how the group brought children and families together with others in similar situations, and how arts and crafts were used to encourage the children to think about and express their emotions and work through their grief journeys. I continue to volunteer at the Chandlers Ford support group.

Over the years I have also been involved with giving presentations, work in schools, conferences and fundraising events. At the BBQ and Christmas party I’m usually found facepainting which I love doing.

Being a volunteer with SS has taught me so much and I enjoy the training sessions on various topics. It’s been hugely rewarding seeing the difference the charity makes and watching the children, often initially struggling to cope, processing their feelings and moving forward.

I have also met wonderful people and made amazing friends along the way.

I’ve witnessed the charity grow from having one support group, one staff member working from a tiny office and just a handful of volunteers to the fantastic organisation it is today. I feel proud and privileged to have been involved with, and part of, such a worthwhile charity which I know has changed many lives for the better. I hope to continue for years yet!
