The People Behind Our Support – Our Volunteers

Honouring our incredible volunteers at our Simon Says Volunteer Day

On a Saturday in February, as part of our 25^th Anniversary celebrations, we were delighted to be joined by more than 50 volunteers at our first dedicated volunteer day to honour their incredible support.

These individuals make it possible for Simon Says to support bereaved children and young people living in Hampshire when they need us the most.  The event created something volunteers tell us they consistently value: time together. Time to reconnect, to share experiences and to feel part of something bigger.

The day helped to provide a dedicated space to connect volunteers from all across the county and celebrate the extraordinary impact being made in so many different roles. From helpline support to young people’s groups, school outreach to peer support, the stories shared throughout the day highlighted the depth and breadth of our work.

There was time for reflection with a talk from our Founder, Sally Stanley, and time to look ahead with a talk from our Chief Operating Officer, Chandra McGowan.

One of the most moving moments was hearing Sally’s story, which gave heartfelt insight into the difference volunteers make at some of the most difficult times in a family’s life. Many attendees also spoke about how inspiring it was to hear from Ryan, whose enthusiasm, lived experience and leadership of the young people’s group at Fairthorne truly brought to life the long-term impact of our support. His energy reminded us all why we volunteer and the real difference Simon Says makes to children and young people navigating their grief journey.

The helpline session was another standout moment for many, offering valuable insight into this vital “first responder” role.  Often the first voice a family hears when they reach out to Simon Says, the helpline volunteer provides calm reassurance at what can be one of the most overwhelming moments in their lives. It is a key role for our charity that calls for composure, empathy and confidence,  laying the vital foundations for trust, understanding and the support that follows.

Alongside celebrating our work, the day also focused on volunteer wellbeing. Many attendees left feeling thoughtful, calm, uplifted and better equipped with practical self-care tools. Volunteers appreciated the reminder to look after themselves as well as each other, and this message remains central to sustaining the compassionate support we provide.

As we continue our 25th anniversary year, we remain deeply grateful to every volunteer who gives their time, empathy and energy to support bereaved children and young people. Together, we help ensure they feel supported, understood and less alone.
